Claire and Rachel, sisters from the UK, always take an annual bike packing holiday and this year it was the Eurovelo 6, from Vienna to Budapest. They completed the route this year in April in the off-season just before the spring started to kick in. Claire has a passion for wine and spirits and has her own blog and article 'Dabbling in the Danube' that you should also take a look at!
How would you describe your Eurovelo 6 Experience in one sentence
It was amazing to see three contrasting capital cities in five days, connected by a flat scenic route
Why did you decide to ride the Eurovelo 6?
We do an annual bike ride and by chance my sister found the route book for Eurovelo 6 and was inspired.
What was the highlight of your trip?
Pedalling towards Esztergom after our longest, most challenging day and finding a route-side bar to have a long cold beer. The midnight spa experience in Budapest was also our end of ride treat.
What was the most challenging part of your trip?
The stretch of Route 11 on a Friday afternoon was hair-raising as the Hungarian truck drivers don’t seem to know how to overtake safely. I am not normally intimidated by traffic but I was shaking after 20km on that road! The Route 6 signage on the outskirts of Budapest was also quite poor and we went wrong several times and had to double back.
What was your favourite town/city and why?
Bratislava is an interesting mix of old and modern, with unusual shops and bars. Also loved Budapest for its spas, incredible architecture and lively riverside.
What time of the year did you ride the Eurovelo 6?
April.... the Route was quiet and it felt slightly out of season.
Would you do it again?
We want to try another part of the route (Passau to Vienna) and also stretches in France through the wine country
Do you have any advice for fellow riders deciding to ride the EuroVelo 6?
I’m glad we did the recommended direction as the wind was behind us. I couldn’t imagine how challenging it would be to go against the wind.
Would you recommend our bike rental services to your friends and family?
Yes
